Hwang Dong-hyuk was recently interviewed by Yonhap News Agency, where he shared new details about Squid Game’s forthcoming third and final season, due out sometime later this year.
“It’s difficult for me to share specifics,” he told the outlet, “but I can tell you this: I wanted to explore the very end of despair, where even those holding onto the faintest glimmers of hope see them shattered. When all hope is extinguished and only despair remains – what lies beyond that?”
Hwang also shared that the upcoming season of Squid Game, now in the final stages of production, will bring the story to a definitive close “in every sense of the word”.
He added that “among the three seasons, the final one is my favourite and you should be prepared for something intense. It will be the strongest message yet.”
The Squid Game creator also dismissed chances of a fourth season, emphasising that “everything will conclude in the last season, both in terms of the characters’ stories and the messages I want to convey to viewers”.
The interview with Hwang comes just days after the very first teaser clip for Squid Game season three dropped on New Year’s Day. The 15-second visual depicts three new players in the game’s iconic numbered tracksuits entering the Red Light, Green Light arena. Paired with the original Young-hee doll, the clip introduced a new male doll called Chul-su.
Squid Game season two premiered on Netflix on December 26. It scored a four-star review, with Nick Levine writing for NME: “With Squid Game‘s third and final season due next year, it’s hardly a spoiler to say there’s no clear resolution. But the final episode is still breathlessly exciting and chokingly emotional. You’ll be left gasping as Squid Game gets its tentacles around you and squeezes hard.”
