The Academy Award winner and star of legal TV show Matlock lost out to Shōgun’s Anna Sawai, with a camera on each nominee as the result was called. As Sawai was announced the winner, the camera pulled away to focus on her, but in the corner of the screen Bates was comedically ripping up her speech staring into the camera that was filming her.
It appears the gesture was a joke, however, as Bates enthusiastically clapped the winner and nodded approvingly to fellow guests at the decision. The 76-year-old already has plenty of awards across a glittering career. She’s a two-time Golden Globe winner, winning in 1991 for her performance in the film Misery, as well as a TV award for the series Late Shift in 1997.
Sawai was equally impressed by her fellow nominee, saying in her acceptance speech “Thank you to the voters for voting for me, even though I would vote for Kathy Bates any day”.

A beloved character actor, Bates is also known for her performances in Titanic, Fried Green Tomatoes, and the TV anthology American Horror Story. She recently disclosed that Matlock, where she plays a retired judge seeking justice for her daughter, would be her final role before retiring, remarking “this is my last dance”.
Sawai’s win was one of four Golden Globe victories for Shōgun, adding to its record-breaking 18 Emmy wins last year. The show, about a Japanese lord in the 1600s fighting against his enemies, also won the Golden Globe for Drama TV Series, as well as the Actor and Supporting Actor awards.
Fan favourite Sawai recently reflected on her beginnings as a singer in J-Pop group Faky, and remarked how the experience made her lose confidence in herself, something she doesn’t want for any future children of hers.
