Nintendo has confirmed the Switch 2 will be announced before the end of the current financial year, which ends March 31. They’ve also said the new console will be backwards compatible with current Switch titles but not much else has been revealed.
A number of images were leaked at the end of last year that allegedly show what the Switch 2 console will look like, with a bigger screen and magnetic joy-con controllers. A source claimed the images “match what the company has told partners to expect from its design.”
Now a new image has reportedly revealed what the Switch 2 controller will look like. The photo, first posted on a Chinese social media site before being shared on Reddit, shows the back and side of one joy-con style controller, similar to the existing Switch design. However it features a new, magnetic docking system and larger shoulder buttons, which ties into speculation that the Switch 2 will be bigger than the current console.
The best look at the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons so far. Seemingly retail models with regulator certification. I have lot more questions now. What’s that hole next to the charging connector, Infrared? Also, the two circular tabs? I think we can confirm the paddle button is legit. pic.twitter.com/CC64I32IlV

Fans are also speculating about a potential sensor along one side of the controller which could turn the joy-con into a mouse. While there have been a number of apparent leaks about the Switch 2, fans have checked the serial number from the controller on Nintendo’s own website, which suggests it’s legit.

Previous leaks have claimed the Switch 2 will be much more powerful than previous Nintendo consoles, with 12GB of RAM compared to the Switch’s 4GB and 256GB of internal storage compared to the original Switch’s 32GB. Other leaks claim a proper announcement about the Switch 2 is due later this week.
The original Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017 after being announced the previous October. It’s since gone on to sell over 146million units.
Last year, Nintendo held a mysterious online playtest for a Minecraft-style game. Many fans have since speculated that the Switch 2 could launch with a brand new MMO.
In other news, Minecraft creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson has confirmed he’s working on a “spiritual successor” to the hit video game. “I still sort of think I’m just a clown getting lucky in a sea of actual talents, so I have no idea if it actually will be good. But I’ll try.”
