On December 26, Netflix premiered the long-awaited second season of its hit Korean survival series Squid Game. Now, the attention is shifting to its upcoming third and final season, which is due to debut exclusively on the streaming platform sometime this year.
Yesterday (January 1), Netflix kicked off the New Year by sharing a short but unnerving first look at Squid Game season three, this time unveiling a new Red Light, Green Light doll named Chul-su.
The clip – which only runs for 15 seconds – depicts three new players in their numbered tracksuits, entering the Red Light, Green Light arena with the infamous Young-hee doll’s back turned to them. After showing her face at a railroad crossing, a male doll is revealed on the other side of the tracks, looking back at her.

A release date for the third season of Squid Game has yet to be announced.
Season two of Squid Game scored a four-star review, with Nick Levine writing for NME: “With Squid Game‘s third and final season due next year, it’s hardly a spoiler to say there’s no clear resolution. But the final episode is still breathlessly exciting and chokingly emotional. You’ll be left gasping as Squid Game gets its tentacles around you and squeezes hard.”
Last week (December 27), series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke about the upcoming final run of episodes, including when he thinks it will be announced and when he thinks it will be released.

Hwang said: “At this point, anything I might say is going to be a spoiler, so I want to be cautious. But what I can say is, after Season two launches, I believe we will be announcing the launch date for Season three soon.” As for when season three will likely premiere, Hwang said: “I probably expect that to launch around summer or fall next year.”
Elsewhere, Hwang in November admitted that the reason he made a second season was “money”. “Even though the first series was such a huge global success, honestly I didn’t make much,” Hwang said. “So doing the second series will help compensate me for the success of the first one too. And I didn’t fully finish the story.”
The writer-director also discussed how he lost “eight or nine” teeth from stress during the shooting of the first season, but admitted, “the stress I feel now is much greater,” given the show’s huge success.
