The global viewing figures smashed the record of 50.1million views previously set by Wednesday in November 2022.

The new series of the K-drama, which landed on Boxing Day (December 26), is also currently sitting at Number Seven on the steaming service’s most popular non-English language TV titles of all time. Season one is currently at the top of that list with 265.2million views.

Season two was also the most watched title from the week December 23-29, while renewed interest was shown in series one which charted at Number Three in the non-English language TV series of the week with 8.1million views.

It comes after Netflix shared its first teaser trailer for the upcoming third season of Squid Game.

A release date for the third season of Squid Game has yet to be announced.

Season two of Squid Game scored a four-star review, with Nick Levine writing for NME: “With Squid Game‘s third and final season due next year, it’s hardly a spoiler to say there’s no clear resolution. But the final episode is still breathlessly exciting and chokingly emotional. You’ll be left gasping as Squid Game gets its tentacles around you and squeezes hard.”

Last week (December 27), series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke about the upcoming final run of episodes, including when he thinks it will be announced and when he thinks it will be released.

Hwang said: “At this point, anything I might say is going to be a spoiler, so I want to be cautious. But what I can say is, after season two launches, I believe we will be announcing the launch date for season three soon.” As for when season three will likely premiere, Hwang said: “I probably expect that to launch around summer or fall next year.”

Elsewhere, Hwang in November admitted that the reason he made a second season was “money”. “Even though the first series was such a huge global success, honestly I didn’t make much,” Hwang said. “So doing the second series will help compensate me for the success of the first one too. And I didn’t fully finish the story.”

The writer-director also discussed how he lost “eight or nine” teeth from stress during the shooting of the first season, but admitted, “the stress I feel now is much greater,” given the show’s huge success.
