In an interview with Cosmopolitan, the ‘Beaches’ singer discussed how she believes that songs should reflect “real life”, adding that what makes a song special are the slip-ups and stumbles that may not make sense.
“I think about beauty standards and how people botch their faces to be perfect,” she told the publication. “They lose their uniqueness. I feel like it’s the same with music. You want to hear the missteps, because that’s what makes it special.”
After being asked about what may be the equivalent to a button nose in music, Beabadoobee – real name Beatrice Laus – shared: “Well, I don’t want it! Let’s keep it crooked.”

She continued: “Maybe I’m writing a song and it doesn’t follow the exact rules of songwriting. Or maybe this word doesn’t make sense next to this one, but that’s how I speak. That’s why people relate to my music.”
The ‘Talk’ singer also opened up about how writing music helps her “soothe [her] inner child.”
“I can’t do that when I write my diary or indulge in bad things, but writing a song is the purest form of art and emotion to me,” she explained and went on to admit that she used to “cringe” when she would listen to her 2020 debut LP ‘Fake It Flowers‘.
“I couldn’t listen to it! I have a lot of empathy for myself today – like, ‘Awh, bless you! You’re going to be fine, Bea!’,” she said. “[Now] I see a younger girl going through this very necessary bit of life. I went through that shit for a lot of people to see. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without it, and it makes me appreciate that part of my life.”

Beabadoobee’s most recent release was her third album ‘This Is How Tomorrow Moves‘. In a four-star review of the LP, NME shared: “[‘Girl Song’] is a heart-wrenching song, filled with a multitude of complex and often contradictory emotions, the knotty realities of young womanhood laid bare. That’s something that shines through the whole of ‘This Is How Tomorrow Moves’ – Beabadoobee’s knack for capturing the twists and turns of growing into yourself with relatable candour. A collection of songs that showcase the tangled feelings of this time, the young artist’s third record is a poignant, powerful thing.”
The album landed the 50th spot on NME‘s 50 Best Albums Of 2024 list, with journalist Hannah Mylrea noting: “Beabadoobee’s third album is a beautiful thing. She continues to document her coming of age through music, her journey of becoming a woman playing out through brilliant indie rock imbued with jazzy folk (‘Real Man’) and slacker rock (‘Beaches’). It’s all grounded by the throughline of Beabadoobee’s stellar lyricism and storytelling.”
In other news, the ‘Perfect Pair’ singer is set to perform as a supporting act at Sabrina Carpenter’s headlining 2025 BST Hyde Park show. She is also slated to perform at Laneway festival next summer.
