The first trailer for James Gunn’s Superman has been roundly panned by fans of Henry Cavill.
Gunn confirmed in December 2022 that the longtime Superman actor would not be involved in his vision of the DC Universe. Gunn said at the time: “In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.”
David Corenswet stars in the titular role in the director’s forthcoming reboot, which is set for release on July 11, 2025.
While many fans praised the recent trailer, which also features fan-favourite character Krypto the Superdog, many have expressed disappointment that the reboot appears to be a step back for the franchise.
One wrote: “Ridiculous, the way they are starting the whole story over makes me angry. Henry Cavill and Zack Snyder should’ve kept the story going. And I hate the Superman suit, it’s ugly!”
Another added: “By far one of the worse things I’ve ever seen as a trailer or concept. Imagine going from Henry Cavill, directed by Zack Snyder, produced by Christopher Nolan, music by Hans Zimmer, to this… unserious shazamish looking superman. Horrible.”
One fan also said: “Doesn’t look great does it… impossible for me to truly give a fuck about Superman tbf he’s the most boring character ever. Can’t believe they fumbled Henry Cavill tho he had it on lock,” while another added: “This clown @JamesGunn actually went from this perfect casting born to play #Superman Henry Cavill to that nobody and that difference in the suit is atrocious!!! This is beyond shameful!”

Some even compared it with the 2006 box office flop Superman Returns starring Brandon Routh.
They wrote: “It resembles the look of Superman Returns, which didn’t do what they had hoped for the character. The suit is, quite simply awful,” before adding: “David Corenswet does look like a young superman, Smallville era. But he, as Superman does not compare to #HenryCavillSuperman.”
I just watched the Superman Trailer…
If i was 10, i would be ‘Super’ hyped for this.
It resembles the look of Superman Returns, which didn’t do what they had hoped for the character.
The suit is, quite simply awful.
There were so many Man of Steel ‘blueprint’ moments, it…

Elsewhere, when asked during a trailer launch event recently how Gunn incorporated what Superman represents for America and the world into the movie, he answered: “I think that’s what ‘Take me home’ is all about. We do have sort of a battered vision of Superman at the beginning, and I think that is our country.
“I believe in the goodness of human beings, and I believe that most people in this country, despite their ideological beliefs or their politics, are doing their best to get by and trying to be good people, despite what it may seem like for the other side, no matter what that other side might be.”
It is the first movie in the new DC Universe, a soft reboot of the DC Extended Universe that will have united continuity and story across live-action films, TV series, animation and video games, with any DC adaptations not fitting into this continuity being referred to as DC Elseworlds.
Corenswet (Pearl, The Politician) plays Superman, while Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult are Lois Lane and Lex Luthor respectively. Also involved are the likes of Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion and Isabela Merced.
