As reported by industry analyst Mat Piscatella (spotted by TheGamer) the Switch outsold the PS2 in the US.
The PS2 is the best-selling console in the world, but in the US that title belongs to the Nintendo DS, a handheld console. Now, the Switch has taken second place and just needs to best its predecessor to take the crown in the region.
Worldwide sales of the PS2 are estimated to be around 160 million, with the Nintendo DS close behind at 154 million. The Nintendo Switch currently sits at 146 million worldwide sales, and as the Switch 2 isn’t expected to be officially announced until next year, it could also surpass the PS2 globally.

The PS2 was a sensation when it launched. Not just a video game console, it could also play DVDs and CDs, effectively making it a home entertainment system that the entire family could enjoy. It also had the ability to connect to the internet in an age before WiFi was widespread.
The Nintendo Switch also captured the hearts of players thanks to its ability to be played docked, connected to a TV or similar large screen, and its portable handheld mode, so gamers could play it in the car, on public transport, or from the comfort of their own bed.
The portability meant it could be easily taken to a friend’s house or family gathering, effectively making it a hybrid console that functioned both as a primary home gaming system and a portable one for easy gaming on the go.
In other news, Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth DLC was scrapped to focus on the final chapter of the trilogy.
