The Terminator is one of the most beloved film franchises of all time, but is there a new entry in the series on the way? Read on to find out.
The classic sci-fi/action movies began with James Cameron’s original The Terminator in 1984, which introduced the world of Skynet, an artificial intelligence that has initiated a nuclear apocalypse.
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s titular cyborg assassin travels from the future on a mission to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) to prevent her from giving birth to the future leader of the human resistance, John Connor.
Cameron, who had only previously directed 1982’s Piranha II: The Spawning, co-wrote the film with Gale Anne Hurd, and based it on a fever dream he experienced. Made for a modest $6.4million (£5.1million), it was a major box office success, grossing $78million (£62million).
Its success led to 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day, often regarded as one of the greatest sequels of all time. Also directed by Cameron, that film introduced state-of-the-art CGI to depict the liquid metal of the villainous T-1000.
Four further films have since been released: Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines (2003), Terminator Salvation (2009), Terminator Genisys (2015) and Terminator: Dark Fate (2019). The later sequels were not as critically acclaimed and explored variants of the franchise’s timeline.
Is there a new Terminator film coming out in cinemas?
The films have been trending in recent weeks as Terminator: Dark Fate recently arrived on Netflix for the first time, leading some to believe that there may be a new instalment on its way.
James Cameron has been dedicating most of his creative time in recent years to his four planned sequels to Avatar, the first of which, Avatar: The Way Of Water, arrived in 2022.
No new film in the franchise has been announced, although Cameron did speculate about the possibility of a future instalment in an interview with Empire earlier this year. “It’s more than a plan,” he said. “That’s what we’re doing. That’s all I’ll say for right now.”
He expanded on his comments, explaining how aware he is of the danger of returning to a beloved universe. “This is the moment when you jettison everything that is specific to the last 40 years of Terminator, but you live by those principles,” he said. “You get too inside it, and then you lose a new audience because the new audience care much less about that stuff than you think they do. That’s the danger, obviously, with Avatar as well, but I think we’ve proven that we have something for new audiences.”
