Global box office in 2025 is projected to reach $33billion, according to the film industry analysts at Gower Street Analytics.

This would put 2025 around eight per cent ahead of 2024, with the London-based company estimating that this year will finish with around $30.5billion. It would put 2025 down 14 per cent against the average of the last three pre-pandemic years at historic exchange rates, and three per cent behind 2023. However, if re-calculated using the current exchange rates, 2025 would come in one per cent ahead of 2023.

Gower Street has North America finishing nine per cent up on 2024 at around $9.7billion, with the international market, excluding China, expected to be seven per cent ahead of this year at approximately $16.8billion. China is projected to hit $6.6billion, but it’s difficult to predict with the country’s market becoming less reliant on Hollywood releases.

Dimitrios Mitsinikos, CEO of Gower Street Analytics, said: “2025 is set to be a strong year for the global box office, fueled by robust studio slates and independent productions. The domestic market is anticipated to approach, and potentially surpass, the $10billion mark, edging closer to pre-pandemic norms.

“However, product availability is only part of the equation. A strengthening dollar may hinder international box office growth, compounded by evolving socio-economic and political factors that have shaped the box office in recent years.”

Rob Mitchell, Director of Theatrical Insights at the firm, highlighted the expansions of some of cinema’s biggest franchises next year, from Avatar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as the Wicked sequel, Wicked: For Good, James Gunn’s Superman, and live-action versions of Disney and DreamWorks classics.

Disney, meanwhile, have also made headlines this week for being the only studio to hit $2billion at box office in the US, the only studio to do so, thanks to the success of movies including Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Moana 2 – three of the four highest-grossing movies of the year. The figure is expected to increase with the release of Mufasa tomorrow (December 20) too, and Searchlight Pictures’ Bob Dylan movie, A Complete Unknown, released in the US on Christmas Day.
