The first trailer for Karate Kid: Legends is out, and unites multiple generations of Karate Kid characters – watch it below.
Four original movies, a remake, an animated series and the comedy-drama series Cobra Kai – part three of the final season is out in February – are set to be joined by the new movie, scheduled for release on May 30, 2025.
In the trailer, Ralph Macchio, who played teenager Daniel LaRusso in the first three movies and reprised his role in Cobra Kai, is brought alongside Jackie Chan, who played maintenance man and kung fu master Mr. Han in the 2010 remake. Together, they mentor Li Fong, played by Ben Wang of American Born Chinese and Chang Can Dunk.
Among the other names confirmed to be cast are Joshua Jackson, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Sadie Stanley, Ming-Na Wen, Aramis Knight, Wyatt Oleff, Danny McBride and Jennifer-Lyn Christie.
Originally, the movie was set for release on June 7 this year, but was pushed back to December 13 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. It was then delayed further to avoid clashing with Cobra Kai.
The official synopsis of the movie, the first Karate Kid film not be produced by Jerry Weintraub, who died in 2015, reads: “In Karate Kid: Legends, after a family tragedy, kung fu prodigy Li Fong is uprooted from his home in Beijing and forced to move to New York City with his mother. Li struggles to let go of his past as he tries to fit in with his new classmates, and although he doesn’t want to fight, trouble seems to find him everywhere.
“When a new friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition – but his skills alone aren’t enough. Li’s kung fu teacher Mr. Han enlists original Karate Kid Daniel LaRusso for help, and Li learns a new way to fight, merging their two styles into one for the ultimate martial arts showdown.”
Meanwhile, Macchio recently appeared in the music video for Coldplay’s song ‘The Karate Kid’ from the expanded Full Moon Edition of their October album ‘Moon Music’.
