Portland’s Sun Atoms return with Everything Forever, their sophomore offering, which is out now via Little Cloud Records. A kaleidoscopic fusion of psychedelic rock and indie pop, the album reaches beyond the ordinary, brimming with bold, brash innovation.
At the helm is Jsun Atoms (The Upsidedown, Daydream Machine), flanked by a formidable lineup: producer and bassist Peter G. Holmström (The Dandy Warhols, Pete International Airport), multi-instrumentalist June Kang, saxophonist-trumpeter-guitarist Mars de Ponte (LoveBomb Go-Go), drummer Eric Rubalcava, and guitarist Derek Spencer Longoria-Gomez (Hi Hazel). Their synergy hums with an electric urgency, weaving in contributions from Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock, Jasno Swarez of The Vandelles, and Lauren Andino of Tremours.
The album suggests horizons just out of reach, merging shadowed rhythms, hushed tones, brooding bass lines, and guitars that oscillate between abrasive bursts and chiming clarity. Its strength lies in its architecture, transcending familiar fragments to become something wholly alive and innovative. On tracks like Mandatory, echoes of Bowie’s Blackstar emerge in forlorn, sax-laden jazz rock, alongside the hushed intimacy of Leonard Cohen and Elliott Smith, elements of prog, and minimalist poetry. Idiot Speaker moves into a gentle, whispering bongo-powered groove, infused with ethereal shoegaze-style chorals.
Free of pomp and pretense, this quietly intense collection redefines alternative music with precision and reverence. Everything Forever sheds bombast and bravado, pose and ego. Each track is meticulously layered, brimming with purpose and evoking both wonder and gravitas. This is music as alchemic transformation, channeling cosmic currents into its essence.
