In April 2023, Foxx was hospitalised after suffering an unspecified health emergency when he was filming his new Netflix movie Back In Action.
Details about the nature of his medical complication have remained largely unknown ever since, although in July he did say to a group of fans in Phoenix: “April 11 last year, I had a bad headache, asked my boy for an Advil. I was gone for 20 days. I don’t remember anything.”
He continued: “So, I’m in Atlanta, my sister and my daughter took me to the first doctor. He said ‘Nah’, gave me a cortisone shot. Next doctor said, ‘Something’s going on up there.’ I won’t say it on camera.”
A few months after the emergency, Foxx took to Instagram to provide an update on his health, telling his followers that he was “finally starting to feel like myself”.
“You’re lookin at a man who is thankful,” he wrote. “Finally startin to feel like myself… it’s been an unexpected dark journey… but I can see the light… I’m thankful to everyone that reached out and sent well wishes and prayers…”
In December 2023, the actor appeared at an award ceremony hosted by Critics Choice Association, where accepted the Vanguard Award. In his emotional, 12-minute speech, Foxx told the audience that he “saw the tunnel” during his spate of illness.
Foxx played three live shows in Atlanta in October, where this special was filmed. “Join us for an unforgettable one-man show as Jamie Foxx takes the stage to share his journey through a serious health scare, filled with humor, heart and inspiration,” read a description of the shows.
The film Foxx was shooting at the time of the hospitalisation, Back In Action, is set to be released on Netflix on January 17. The spy action comedy co-stars Cameron Diaz in her return to acting after an 11-year retirement.
