Titled The Mandalorian & Grogu, the film is set to be directed by The Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau and is scheduled for release on May 22, 2026. This will be the first new Star Wars film since 2019’s Star Wars Episode XI – The Rise of Skywalker.

Most of the details about the film have been kept secret so far but a few enticing specifics have been revealed. Pedro Pascal will be returning as bounty hunter Din Djarin / The Mandalorian, with Grogu once again being a mixture of puppetry and computer effects.

Joining the cast will be Sci-Fi legend Sigourney Weaver in an undisclosed role. Speaking to Deadline about the project in August, she said” “I’m playing a role in The Mandalorian & Grogu. I got to meet Grogu for the first time the other day. I’m filming that before I go to London for The Tempest at the end of the year”.

Dave Filoni, Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm, is co-writing the film with Favreau and recently talked about his enthusiasm for the movie. “I’m very excited about it,” he told Extra. “Jon and I had a great time working on that, as we always do. It was great seeing Grogu. He’s become such a star and it’s amazing how it’s evolved, what we can do now with the puppetry compared to Season 1 and where we are today in a film working with the team which I worked quite a bit with them on the puppetry. Legacy effects did a fantastic job and what a wonderful little creation Grogu is.”

The characters became a TV sensation thanks to the 2019 Disney+ show The Mandalorian, which ran for three seasons and also played a part in the 2021 spin-off The Book of Boba Fett.

The Mandalorian & Grogu will be the first of several new Star Wars film releases, with a new trilogy in the works from X-Men: Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg.
