In a late-night address on December 3, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law, accusing the opposition Democratic Party of engaging in anti-state activities and sympathizing with pro-communist forces.
Yoon cited the party’s impeachment motion against top prosecutors and rejection of a government budget proposal as grounds for the declaration.
He described their actions as rebellion-inciting and harmful to the nation’s stability, justifying martial law as necessary to eradicate anti-state forces and restore normalcy.
However, access to the National Assembly has been blocked, preventing lawmakers from convening. Yoon assured the public that efforts would be made to minimize disruptions caused by the measure.
The enforcement of martial law includes limitations of public gatherings. Military presence are enforcing the restrictions on the streets. Protesters can be arrested with warrants. Additionally, there is strict monitoring of the South Korean news media.
This is the first time martial law in South Korea has been enforced since military dictatorship ended in the 1980s.
Leaders of opposition forces are heading to Parliament states this is an illegal move and will do what they can to reverse the decision.

In regards to the entertainment industry, the martial law could have a significant impact on this year’s end-of-year award shows and festivals, concerts, fanmeetings and so forth, which are a highlight of the entertainment industry.
These events often require extensive coordination, large public gatherings, and live broadcasts, all of which may be restricted under martial law.
Potential curfews, increased military presence, or limitations on public assemblies could force organizers to cancel or delay the shows. Alleged large entertainment agencies such as HYBE, SM, and JYP have been contacted about cancelling events. 1
