Adams had led the series from seasons one as protagonist Michael Ross opposite co-lead Gabriel Macht’s Harvey Specter, but left at the end of season seven due to personal reasons. The show would go on to continue for two more seasons before coming to an end in 2019.
Speaking to Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Dinner On Me podcast, revealed more about his exit from the series. Adams explained that he was going through a dark period and was dealing with depression and a drinking problem.

“I wasn’t taking good care of my mental health and I was drinking too much [at] the end of season seven,” Adams said to Ferguson. “I was in a zone of living a pretty unexamined life. Pretty miserable [and] I would say, pretty depressed. I didn’t have the tools to deal with that depression beyond just spending money and drinking too much, and not really knowing how to talk about it.”
He continued: “I would numb myself [to] deal with my insecurity and my fears. And they just weren’t working. And they were taking a toll on my relationship, for sure, but also just making me a very not present father. That for me was a breaking point when I was like, ‘I think I should stop drinking probably, because I don’t wanna be that dad.’ The best thing I think I ever did for myself was stop drinking. It just needed to happen in order for all these other things to happen.”
Patrick J. Adams then went on to say that he had considered returning for an eighth season but couldn’t find any other reason to do so other than financial security: “The only reason to stay was… money. I didn’t know what else to offer. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and think about the money [Macht] made those last two years, but I never regretted the decision for a second. It was the right thing for my marriage. It was time.”
In other Suits-related news, it’s upcoming spin-off Suits LA is due to premiere on NBC on February 23, 2025, and will see Gabriel Macht’s Harvey Specter return for a three-episode arc.

Though Adams has said recently that he’s keen to return – or even have Suits be turned into a film, his involvement in Suits LA is unlikely.
Suits LA will include new characters and a fresh setting. Unlike numerous shows now getting prequel or sequel series, Suits LA will be neither – it will be an entirely new story set in the world of Suits.
Suits LA will star Stephen Amell, Josh McDermitt, Lex Scott David, Bryan Greenberg and more.
In other classic remake/spin-off news, Amazon Prime Video’s Cruel Intentions series has scored a two-star review from Nick Levine for NME. Levine wrote: “This series is stylish and sprightly enough for a lazy binge-watch, even if it never fully lives up to its spicy source material.”
