Gladiator 2 star Paul Mescal was seemingly unbothered by a recent meeting with King Charles, saying: “I’m Irish so it’s not on the list of priorities.”

The actor was introduced to King Charles at the Gladiator II premiere last Wednesday (November 13) in London. The world premiere, which took place in Leicester Square, helped to raise money for the Film and TV Charity.

In a new interview with Variety, Mescal was asked about meeting the King and said he was surprised that it had happened at all.

He said: “How wild is it? It’s definitely not something that I thought was in the bingo cards.

“I’m Irish, so it’s not on the list of priorities,” the actor added.

He went on to say that he was pleased for the film’s director Ridley Scott. “It’s an amazing thing for Ridley because I know how important that is for him.

“So, to see his film celebrated in that context was pretty special,” he continued.

The King also met with Mescal’s Gladiator 2 co-stars including Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal.

Last week it was announced that when Saturday Night Live returns next month, Mescal will host.

It will be Mescal’s first appearance on the show alongside musical guest Shaboozey. It will also mark Shaboozey’s SNL debut.

Reviewing the Paul Mescal-starring Gladiator 2, NME awarded the movie three stars and said: “If you loved Gladiator, it’s odds-on you’ll enjoy this too. It’s got all of the same exciting bits – swordfighting, rousing speeches, nasty poshos getting what they deserve.

“The problem is that’s all it gives you. You want to feel like you’re watching Maximus lift off his helmet and deliver that iconic monologue for the first time again. You want the thrill of a core memory being unlocked. You want to know you’ll be quoting Mescal’s lines to your mates in the pub for the next 10 years. Gladiator 2, piously respectful as it is, can only offer a faded memory of that experience. There was a dream that was Rome – and this is kind of it.”
