Chicago Post-Punk Outfit Deep Cricket Night Release Psychedelic “Mind Gets Flayed” EP

Chicago’s Deep Cricket Night emerged from the pandemic’s shadowed cocoon, climbing through the tangled roots of isolation into a sound unshackled and shimmering. Their music pulses anew, radiating electric energy, shedding old skins and charging forward with a fresh, fervent spirit. Picture the raw edge of Television intertwined with the ghostly echoes of 1970 Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett murmuring riddles to the ether. The essence of the Electric Prunes meets the complex layers of early Yes, spinning a blend both nostalgic and startling. Lance Drake’s vocals soar and swerve, anchored by Greg MacAyeal’s hypnotic bass lines, while keys and percussion drive a symphony of psychedelic splendor.

The ensemble consists of Lance Drake on lead vocals and guitar, Greg MacAyeal slinging bass lines that anchor and shimmer, Dave Buoscio conjuring from piano and organ, and Michael Ressler delivering percussive heartbeats. Deep Cricket Night carves out a new identity, where MacAyeal’s bass lines hook deep and Drake’s lyrical command gives the music its voice, drawing listeners into a realm both familiar and fantastically uncharted.

Sudden Summer speaks of yearning, a deep ache wrapped in the brief magic of golden moments. The tale unfurls, full of hearts spellbound and souls entranced, clutching at dreams that melt like morning mist. A hope for connection thrums beneath, shadowed by the dread of tripping and losing what’s treasured, as fresh emotions blossom and light dances in ever-changing ways. Paul Torgus’s video captures this essence with a strange, shimmering spell: a parade of urban insects marching through surreal cityscapes, bound together by a drifting, avian angel. The imagery feels alive, each vision teetering between enchantment and something dreamily unsettling.

Say Come Hither—a kaleidoscope of sound and vision, wrapped in Torgus’s spellbinding animation—brings forth a realm drenched in mystery and rich with dreamlike disarray. The song captures a pursuit both desperate and hypnotic, where vivid scenes of blurred encounters and restless emotions swirl and collide. An elusive connection glimmers just out of reach, weaving through fragmented realities and turbulent feelings. The themes of longing, mixed with a fog of confusion, tell of a journey trapped in loops that never quite resolve. “She strolls,” the refrain echoes, an enigmatic figure drifting through the haze, embodying a presence that’s part memory, part mirage.
