Words With Friends, the popular multiplayer spelling game, is launching a series of single-player games including a Wordle rival.

Words With Friends launched in 2009 and sees players competing against other players in a spelling game similar to Scrabble. “Words With Friends is easy to learn, can help strengthen vocabulary knowledge, and will provide hours of mentally stimulating, entertaining brain puzzles,” boasts the game’s website, with up to 40 games able to happen simultaneously.
As well as offering the multiplayer version of the game, Words With Friends also has a solo challenge mode where players try and best virtual WordMasters in short, themed rounds.
However today Words With Friends has confirmed a number of new single-player games.These include a daily crossword, the anagram-solving Word Wheel and a themed-word search that gives players 24-hours to solve it.
There’s also the Wordle-inspired Guess Word. “Give your brain an ultra-fast workout by finding the secret word in six attempts,” reads the description. “Look forward to a new word to guess every day, and challenge yourself to find the word in fewer attempts to improve your stats. Share your results with friends to show off your vocabulary prowess!”

“Words With Friends has always been about connecting players through friendly competition,” said publisher Zynga’s vice president of mobile games Yaron Leyvand. “Our players asked if they could do even more, so we’ve added a whole new layer of personally fulfilling solo mini-games where you can disconnect from the world and play word games, with or without friends. Whether you want to playfully compete, creatively challenge yourself, or just relax, Words With Friends is always here for you.”
Earlier this month, Wordle players were asked to break their streak and not play the game as tech workers at the New York Times went on strike. A number of free-to-play, strike-friendly alternatives were shared and yesterday (November 13), workers ended the industrial action by promising to “move the fight inside”.
