Danny Dyer has dropped a massive hint that a sequel to Human Traffic could finally be on the way.
Speaking in a new episode of his Live And Let Dyers podcast with his daughter Dani, Dyer reflected on his breakthrough role as Moff in the original 1999 film, which is set over the course of a drug-fuelled weekend in Cardiff.
He said: “I did Human Traffic, which obviously it took two years to come out. The reason it took so long is because it was very controversial. It was a film about hedonism and people taking drugs.
“So while I was waiting for that to come out, I had to go back to the temping agency, and I was a lift operator, pushing buttons in a lift. I think I’d mentioned to someone, ‘This ain’t really my job. I’ve got a film coming out.’ And they laughed in my face. ‘Yeah, course you have, mate.’ How fucking wrong was they, Dan?”
He continued: “I’m really proud of that film, you know? Who knows, ladies and gentlemen, for you old ravers out there – and I know you’re out there, you old druggies – there might be a Human Traffic II.”
A sequel has long been mooted with director Justin Kerrigan confirming that a script had been written and that original cast members including Dyer, Shaun Parkes (Koop) and Nicola Reynolds (Nina) would be involved in 2021.
Reiterating what he said in 2019, he confirmed the sequel would be “a reaction to Brexit”.
Kerrigan added: “It’s time to make the film. We’ve got everything scripted and ready to go. I’ve got no shortage of actors, producers, art directors, musicians and special effects people that want to work on the film.”
He continued: “The script that I’ve written I’d love to direct. I think it’s more relevant today than ever. The central themes are fear versus love, money versus love and control versus love. And it’s really all about the people coming together. And that’s why it was relevant for Brex-shit and that’s why it’s relevant now [during the pandemic].”
“…It’s just as fun and mad as the first film, but it’s set in our times. And, you know, the rave generation are mostly parents now but it’s really about recapturing the spirit of the times which brought [the characters] all together and the second film is really about how they try and come together in a completely new time.”
But up until now, no word on a sequel has been forthcoming. Earlier this year, the original film celebrated a takeover at Glastonbury.
Dyer meanwhile is currently starring in the Disney+ series Rivals.
