Former Skins and Game Of Thrones actress Hannah Murray was sectioned in 2017 as a result of involvement in a wellness cult, it’s been reported.

No further details are known at this point, but The Bookseller shared that Murray’s memoir, The Make-Believe, in which she looks back on her experiences, will be published by Hutchinson Heinemann following a 13-way auction and is set to be published in 2026.
Murray said, “The Make-Believe tells a deeply personal story that has lived inside me for many years and which it now feels vital to share. I could not be more thrilled to be working with Helen Conford, whose vision for the book aligns perfectly with mine.”
Hutchinson Heinemann said, “This is the story of the blurred line between what is real, and what is an illusion; what we must accept and what we wish to be true; between solid earth beneath your feet and a world where anything is possible if you only commit. It is about the lure of those that tell us they can save us, and the deceptive structure of organisations that promise us ‘wellness’. It’s about the acting world, but also about the way all of us act, hiding our vulnerabilities from everyone except the people trained to prey on them.”
Conford, a publisher at the company, added, “Hannah’s writing is astute, deeply felt, rigorous and compulsive. The Make-Believe is about Hannah’s own life, but her story expands our empathy beyond its current scope. We couldn’t put it down, and think it is a profound and long-lasting book. We’re over the moon she chose to work with us.”

Murray began her career in Skins as a teenager, playing Cassie Ainsworth in the first two seasons of the Channel 4 drama from 2007 to 2008, and later reprised her role in the final series in 2013. Her character lived with a number of mental health conditions, including anorexia and low self-esteem.
After Skins, she appeared in the West End play That Face, the ITV adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? and the sci-fi thriller Womb. From 2012 to 2019, she then appeared as Gilly in Game Of Thrones – Gilly started out as a recurring character in seasons two and three before being promoted to the main cast for the remainder of the show’s run.
