The original Subnautica was released into Early Access in 2014 before getting a full launch in 2018. The game went on to sell over 5million copies and is regarded as one of the best survival games of all time. A planned DLC was turned into 2019’s spin-off title Subnautica: Below Zero, but now a full sequel has been announced.

“Immerse yourself in a new adventure with Subnautica 2, an open-water survival game from the creators of the Subnautica series. Play alone or with friends as you explore alluring biomes and discover fascinating creatures. Craft vehicles, tools, and bases to survive this mysterious alien world,” reads the official description. A teaser trailer gives fans their first taste of a new planet to explore.

“Whether you’re bringing the experience of your previous adventures with you, or are new to the Subnautica games, you’ll get to explore lush new environments, encounter fascinating creatures around every corner, and uncover the secrets at the core of this mysterious planet. But as familiar as things might seem to seasoned players at first glance, Subnautica 2 will offer new and unique experiences that will keep you on your… fins,” teased developers Unknown Worlds.

Subnautica 2 will launch in Early Access for PC and Xbox at some point in 2025. It will also be a Day One release for Xbox Game Pass.

The sequel was first hinted at in 2022 thanks to a job listing while publishers Krafton said Subnautica 2 would be a multi-player live service game. It later backtracked, with developers confirming that there would be “no season passes, no battle passes, no subscription” for Subnautica 2 (via Eurogamer).

In other news, voice actor James Alexander has explained why Black Myth: Wukong boss Yin Tiger has a Brummie accent.
