Bob Dylan biopic ‘A Complete Unknown’ shows infamous Newport gig in new trailer

The first full trailer for the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet, has been released – check it out below.

The film will chart the legendary musician’s controversial switch from acoustic to electric guitar, and the trailer shows glimpses of scenes from Dylan’s infamous appearance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, where sections of the audience booed him for veering towards a more rock-influenced sound.

After arriving in New York City’s Greenwich Village from Minnesota, we see Chalamet’s Dylan at early recording sessions and winning acclaim for his live performances. As his fame spirals out of control, and his desire to change his sound grows, the tensions in his life become harder to control.

Check out the trailer here:

A Complete Unknown is set to be released in US cinemas on December 25, with a UK release to follow on January 17. Edward Norton stars as folk singer Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning plays Dylan’s girlfriend Sylvie Russo and Monica Barbaro portrays Joan Baez.

The film is directed by James Mangold, who also helmed the acclaimed Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line. Mangold also co-wrote the film alongside Jay Cocks (Gangs of New York, The Age of Innocence).

The new trailer follows on from a teaser that was released in July, which featured Chalamet singing ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall’. Watch that below.

Last year, Mangold confirmed that Chalamet would sing in A Complete Unknown, with the actor having showcased his vocal abilities in the hit musical Wonka last Christmas.

Speaking to Collider, Mangold said: “It’s such an amazing time in American culture, and the story of Bob’s – a young, 19-year-old Bob Dylan coming to New York with two dollars in his pocket and becoming a worldwide sensation within three years.”

“First being embraced into a family of folk music in New York and of course kind of outrunning him at a certain point as his star rises so beyond belief. It’s such an interesting true story and about such an interesting moment in the American scene.”

In a recent interview with NME alongside his Dune: Part Two co-star Austin Butler, Chalamet said he would have liked Butler’s version of Elvis Presley, from the Baz Luhrmann hit Elvis, to appear in A Complete Unknown.
