Joker 3: is a sequel to ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ happening?

Joaquin Phoenix teams up with Lady Gaga in the sequel to 2019’s Joker.

Directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover), Joker: Folie à Deux picks up as Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) is institutionalised at Arkham Asylum awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker, where he meets fellow patient Lee Quinzel (Gaga).

Is a sequel to Joker: Folie à Deux on the cards?

At the time of writing, Warner Bros. has not announced a sequel. Judging by recent comments from director Todd Phillips, this incarnation of the character might have made its final bow.

Speaking to Variety earlier this year about a follow-up, Phillips said: “It was fun to play in this sort of sandbox for two movies, but I think we’ve said what we wanted to say in this world.”

He echoed a similar sentiment when asked about a potential spin-off for Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn by The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s not really where this movie is headed for me,” he said. “I feel like my time in the DC Universe was these two films.”

While this might sound like it is the end of the road for Phoenix’s Joker, Phillips did make similar comments following the first film. “Well, I don’t think we’re gonna make a second one,” he told Jake Hamilton at the time. “That’s just not in our plans.”

The possibility of another sequel then, with or without Phillips, might hinge on how well Joker: Folie à Deux performs at the box office.

What DC films are in the works?

The next DC movie will be James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, which is set to reboot the entire DC Universe on July 11, 2025. David Corenswet stars as the Man Of Steel, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Beyond that project, a sequel to Matt Reeves’ The Batman is scheduled to come out in 2026, alongside Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow starring Milly Alcock.
