Released in 1998, turn-based role-playing game Fallout 2 was developed by Black Isle Studios and published by Interplay Productions. The official description calls it “the sequel to the critically acclaimed game that took RPG’ing out of the dungeons and into a dynamic, apocalyptic retro-future”.  Bethesda then took over the franchise for 2008’s Fallout 3 and have been leading the series ever since.

However, a fan-led community of developers is currently working on a remake of Fallout 2. Project Arroyo was first founded in 2019 but development properly began a few years later with the team looking to “recreate and reimagine Fallout 2 in the Creation Engine of Fallout 4.”

As well as turning Fallout 2 into a 3D, open-world adventure, Project Arroyo will also add cut content “along with many more new locations, although probably not in a way you’d think. One thing we can guarantee is that everything will remain lore-friendly,” explains their FAQs. The team will also be recreating the music and rerecording all the voice lines.

So far, Project Arroyo has shared a trailer showcasing a number of recreated Fallout 2 locations as well as a side-by-side comparison video of the original and their reimagined version of the game.

Release details for the project have yet to be confirmed, but the fan-led Fallout 2 remake will only be available on PC, due to the storage limits of consoles. Project Arroyo is being created by a team of fans and you can apply to help with development here.

Earlier this year Fallout: London, a fan-created full-conversion mod for Fallout 4, was released after years of development. It went on to break a number of download records at online store GOG.

It comes after Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout series caused a spike in interest in the franchise, with a number of games getting a huge boost in players following its launch. The second season is expected in early 2026 but a teaser trailer has already confirmed fan-favourite character Mr House is set to play a big role.

In other news, it looks like a mobile version of Palworld could be in the works, despite an ongoing legal battle with Nintendo.
