Before I Drift Away — Los Angeles’ Casket Cassette Debuts Penitent New Single “Apology”

I am done for
I am losing the war
Before I drift away
I just wanna say
Sorry I’m not really living

Humanity, in its grand experiment, has often stumbled. We have polluted rivers, divided nations, and waged wars—driven by ego, ignorance, and short-sightedness. Yet, it is in our failures that we also confront the absurdity of existence. We realize, despite the messes we’ve made, there’s no going back. The general consensus -for better or worse – seems to be, “Screw it, we’ll move forward anyway.”

Casket Cassette, led by Los Angeles native Constant Williams, powerfully addresses this paradoxical nature of humanity – forever choosing the worst option for existence, it seems. A solo endeavor, Williams blends the moody synth-pop of the 80s with deeply personal, poetic reflections on the modern human condition. Casket Cassette’s music navigates the tension between emotional peaks and the brutal realities of life.

The post-punk anthem “Apology” delves into profound regret and sorrow for not truly living or finding one’s way in life. It reflects on feelings of failure, acknowledges struggles, and offers an apology for not being able to navigate life’s complexities. The lyrics convey a sense of resignation, as the penitent protagonist feels they are slipping away and yearns to express their remorse before it’s too late. With his mournful, echoing voice, one finds compadres in contemporary acts such as Harsh Symmetry, Haunt Me, Twin Ion Engine, and Creux Lies.

“I’m always interested in the radical state of oppositional symbiosis between ecstasy and agony, darkness and light, happiness and sadness,” says Williams. “To me, this is what it means to be human. In Apology, I wanted to unpack this further, creating something danceable that also explores an exhausted surrender to the obscurities and confusions of life.”

The beauty of life isn’t in perfection but in embracing uncertainty, acknowledging our missteps, and forging ahead. It’s in this collective decision to continue, despite the chaos, that we find resilience, adaptability, and a curious, stubborn hope.

Casket Cassette, a name rooted in a childhood memory, draws its inspiration from a live song recorded onto a cassette by Williams’ father and placed in his grandfather’s casket. This fusion of the personal and the sombre informs Williams’ music, which delves deep into themes of mental illness, addiction, grief, and heartbreak, while leaving room for glimpses of resilience and humour. Having recently completed the prestigious Iowa Writers’ Workshop, Williams brings a distinct literary perspective to his songwriting. Touring alongside Blood Club and DustBowlChampion, Williams’ performances blend introspection and catharsis into an exorcism of raw emotion.
