This year’s goal is to help developing countries that are saddled by high-interest loans, forcing their governments to spend more on debt repayments than on the needs of their people, and pushing more people into extreme poverty. To alleviate that cycle, this year’s Global Citizen Festival campaign is supporting the replenishment of the World Bank’s fund that provides zero and low interest loans for 75 of the world’s lowest-income countries, known as IDA.

Global Citizen calls on the world’s wealthiest countries to increase their contributions to IDA by at least 25 percent, which will support economic development for more than 1.5 billion people, including providing access to electricity for 250 million people across Africa by 2030.
