Donald Glover Explains Why He’s Retiring Childish Gambino Moniker

It is upward and onward for Donald Glover in 2024. His Childish Gambino moniker is no longer giving, so he’s retiring it.

Recently the Edwards, Calif., native interviewed with the New York Times. During the conversation, he discussed his new musical effort, Bando Stone & The New World.

This release marks his last entry under the Childish Gambino name. In his mind, the persona has served its purpose. “It really was just like, ‘Oh, it’s done.’ It’s not fulfilling,” he admitted. “And I just felt like I didn’t need to build in this way anymore.”

Back in 2017 at the Governor’s Ball, he announced that his next Childish Gambino project would be his last under that alias.

That wasn’t the first time he played with the idea of doing away with the name. During a 2015 appearance on Today, he gave more details on how he views the persona.

“I always want to do music. I love music. And I want to be putting out projects quietly everywhere, and I wanna produce. I guess Childish Gambino is a period in my art time” he said. “I want to have periods in my life. I feel like Childish Gambino is a period that should come to a close. I like endings.”

Glover was originally given the rap pseudonym by an unofficial Wu-Tang Clan generator.

Donald Glover’s Bando Stone & The New World serves as the soundtrack to a film of the same name. It is slated for a July 19 release. You can view the trailer for the movie below.
