you on a journey of independence with her latest single, “getting in my way.” The
single showcases ábi’s ability to create a unique blend of K-pop with a touch
of contemporary R&B and neo-soul.

ábi joined forces with Korean producer DAVIAN to create this anthem of liberation. The mesmerizing voice and fusion of musical styles from
the LA-based singer showcase her cultural background and expertise from
training in both the United States and South Korea.

I got to talk with ábi for KpopWise about the powerful
meaning behind this single and her journey into music. Dive into the
conversation as ábi gives insight into her creative process and advice on success
in the music industry.

Congrats on the release on your newest single “getting in my
way.” What is the inspiration behind this track?

Thank you so much! “getting in my way” was inspired by a
transitional period I was encountering with my artist identity, with a lot of
internal conflict of deliberating who I was as an independent solo artist vs.
who I was as the frontwoman of a band. I was in a position of having to pivot –
after a nearly-completed project was “held hostage” by a producer I used to
work with. This song is an anthem of breaking free from the habit of idolizing
someone who just isn’t worth the pedestal. It’s all about reclaiming your power
and realizing you don’t need anyone else’s validation to shine or achieve what
you’re ultimately after.

“getting in my way” is a powerful song of liberation and
strength. Is there a song or album that has brought you strength and
encouragement?

The album, “Blood,” by Lianne La Havas is one I always have
on rotation.

How did your journey into music begin? What were some
challenges you’ve faced along the way?

I have always loved to sing since I was little.
Participating in K-Pop Star in my early years helped me determine my desire to
study music to be able to create my own more intentionally. There was a period
of debating where I wanted to pursue my career—and it was between the US and
Korea. Coupled with my identity crisis, I had to think about what was next.
While I had established my presence in the music industry in South Korea, with
my hopes to be able to bring more exposure of K-pop music and Korean artists to
the United States, it felt fitting to continue my journey in Los Angeles, CA
where I could connect and collaborate with diverse creatives.

What were some of your musical influences growing up?

I really enjoyed listening to singers like Ella Fitzgerald,
Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, and so many more—there’s a lot to
learn from the greats. The versatility in their voice, the unique phrasing, and
sense of emotion delivered through their performance truly guided and inspired
me to be the artist I am today.

Can you give us a little insight into your creative process
as a songwriter?

There’s always an inclination to write when “something
happens,” whether that’s a turning point, a new conflict, a tragedy, something
to celebrate, or of course, love. Because my songs are rooted in experiences I’ve
lived through, the words come naturally when pen meets paper. From there, I
work with my incredible team to further develop and grow the song through the
arranging and production process to ensure the storytelling is captivating and
authentic.

As a multicultural artist who has experienced the music
industry in both South Korea and the United States, what advice would you give
to individuals who want to pursue music in either market?

As an artist who is also a Social Media Manager by day, I
pay close attention to the market’s trends. And though “finding your niche” was
a prominent strategy for increasing exposure, more recently I’ve noticed that
those who fit into multiple categories—or multiple “niches” —actually reach a
larger audience. Because if you think about it, we’re all multidimensional as
human beings. We have multiple passions and a range of different things we like
and dislike, so I believe the best way to present yourself is to be your
fullest self, rather than trying to squeeze into a specific category to
increase visibility. Those who resonate with you, will resonate with you
because you’re you.

Your Instagram showcases your eye for aesthetics. How would
you describe your style when it comes to fashion?

I tend to be more of a minimalist than a maximalist on a
day-to-day basis, but I typically reach for pieces that are sleek, modern, and
a little bit edgy. I love a monochromatic palette (if you haven’t noticed),
with mostly all-black outfits taking up the majority of my apartment’s square
footage. My favorite color is also black (surprise, surprise), simply because I
love the sense of sophistication and timelessness. I always love a good leather
jacket to add some drama and also enhance the polished aesthetic, creating a
classic-film-noir meets modern street style.

Besides your new single, are there any other upcoming
projects you want to share with fans?

I’m actually so excited to share that “getting in my way” is
just a taste of what’s on the way. This release is a teaser for a three-part
album I’ve been working on for the last several years with some of the best
creatives and collaborators, and I can’t wait to finally be able to share it
with you. Meet me over on Instagram @abigailkim_ for the latest updates and
stay in touch!
