Welsh Duo Plastic Estate Lay Down a Timeless New Wave Sound in Their Video for “Speak to Me”

The latest single, “Speak To Me,” by Welsh synth-pop/post-punk duo Plastic Estate, intertwines the nostalgic charm of indie pop, 2010s chillwave, and new wave, resulting in a sound that feels both timeless and contemporary.CCrafted by Nicholas James and Stanley Fouracres, the minds behind Plastic Estate, this unique blend of brooding synths, driving rhythms, and evocative vocals was honed amidst the vibrant post-punk scene of Cardiff.

By blending the legacy of a bygone golden era with the immediacy of today, Plastic Estate’s music draws on the spirit of bands like Aztec Camera, Talk Talk, Spandau Ballet, ABC, Prefab Sprout and Future Islands, weaving pensive guitar work with whimsical, introspective synth chords. Speak To Me exemplifies this approach, offering beautiful harmonies and a sense of urgency beneath its polished exterior.

“Yes, there is a lot to be changed and to fight for, but good vibes are not just for recreational use, they can literally build a sense of community among people,” they say.

Speak To Me delves into the fragile nature of time and the looming end of a relationship. It’s a plea for honesty amidst a web of deceit, comparing the situation to a “sleeping car” propelled by hatred, hurtling towards its inevitable fate. The chorus, an earnest request for truth, underscores the emotional chaos and the quest for clarity. The self-directed video amplifies this with a dreamlike, scarlet-soaked portrayal of grief, evoking the surreal, unsettling moments that follow a romantic separation. Taking a great cue from David Lynch, it’s a hauntingly beautiful exploration of heartbreak and the desperate need for genuine connection amidst the turmoil.
