David Hasselhoff wants gamers to do more about climate change

David Hasselhoff has been revealed as the face of a new climate change initiative from non-profit organisation PlanetPlay.

The Make Green Tuesday Moves campaign looks to tackle climate change by offering special items in a number of games, with proceeds going towards fully certified sustainability projects.

On the first Tuesday of the month, participating studios will launch a special “green” item within their games that will be exclusive to the MGTM movement.  These items can include new or upcycled DLC items such as characters, costumes or objects, according to the PlanetPlay website. Each offering will remain live until the next monthly activation begins.

“All gamers need to do to get involved in Make Green Tuesday Moves is harness their passive activism, by continuing to play the games they love to contribute to amazing sustainability causes,” reads the press release.

So far the likes of Niantic, Hutch and Ten Square Games have signed up to the program, with the July offering including a number of mobile games such as Peridot, Fishing Clash and Solitaire. The games have been played over 4billion times, and collectively have over 36 million daily players, says PlanetPlay. A dedicated page on GooglePlay has also been launched.

And the whole initiative has been fronted by David Hasselhoff, who is the first “Star Of The Month”. In one clip, the Knight Rider actor explains how he’s been on some amazing movie sets. “But my favourite set of all? Planet Earth”. He goes on to encourage games to “make a difference, together”.

Another clip sees him describe the initiative as “an epic comeback for Mother Earth” while a third sees him don his iconic Knight Rider leather jacket and drive around in talking car Kitt. “We want your help in saving the planet,” says Hasselhoff.

“The Make Green Tuesday Moves initiative embodies the incredible potential of the games community to drive meaningful change. With David Hasselhoff as our first ‘Star of the Month,’ we want to inspire millions of players to join our mission to help keep global warming below the 1.5 degree threshold,” said CEO at PlanetPlay Rhea Loucas. “We are thrilled to have The Hoff on board and can’t wait to see the impact this collaboration will achieve.”
