Glastonbury 2024 viewers react to Chris Martin’s accent: “The voice of a crap 1970’s TV detective”

Coldplay may have just played a record-breaking Glastonbury 2024 set, but fans have been vocal about Chris Martin’s apparent accent change during the performance.

Social media users began tweeting during the set, which was broadcast globally via BBC iPlayer. “Chris Martin talks like me when I inadvertently slip into a generic ‘foreign’ accent when attempting to communicate with a waiter who doesn’t speak English,” wrote X/Twitter user @MrLukowski.

“At what point did Chris Martin’s accent change into the voice of a crap 1970’s TV detective?” questioned @RobSummerfield1. One user compared his sudden accent switch to Alex Turner – “Chris Martin seems to have also gone to the Alex Turner school of what the fuck is that accent.” – while another was puzzled by Martin referring to Glastonbury as a “city”.

Chris Martin seems to have also gone to the Alex Turner school of what the fuck is that accent. #Coldplay #Glastonbury

Chris Martin just called Glastonbury “the greatest city on earth”. I know he probably wasn’t being literal but it is a town. And has he developed a bit of an American accent? Anyway: down with this sort of thing.

I don’t care how much you like his music, when he affects that ridiculous American accent with a baby voice, Chris Martin needs to be cancelled.

Chris Martin’s accent is strange now when he talks. He does live in Malibu, California though which is probably the reason. #glastonbury

@coldplay

What’s happened to Chris Martin’s accent? Has he been living in the Austrian Alps for the last 10 years?

In NME’s four-star review of their Glastonbury set, Andrew Trendell noted Martin’s words about the festival: ““I look around and I see so many amazing wonderful people from all over the place, and that’s what makes Glastonbury the best city in the world in my opinion,” he offers, honouring “the most peace-loving, love-making people” that make up the Glasto populace. He admits that Coldplay have “stolen so much of the ethos of Glastonbury’s vision”, and as a result they become “a band of 100,004 people”.”

Coldplay were joined by an array of guests on stage, including Little Simz, Femi Kuti, Victoria Canal, Laura Mvula, and actor Michael J. Fox. The latter’s surprise appearance drew huge reactions on social media as well.

Simply speechless!
The band plays “Fix You” alongside Michael J. Fox! This is one of the best shows of the band’s career, without a doubt! #ColdplayGlastonbury#Glastonbury #Glastonbury2024 pic.twitter.com/umhVsbB3WV

In his NME review, Trendell continued: “Will Coldplay top Glasto again? Five more times? Who knows? Martin revealed a few years back that the band planned to stop making music in 2025, telling NME they had a plan to make 12 albums; now number 10 ‘Moon Music’ is coming in October. There’s a question mark over the future, but tonight was a good crack at making history with a set that felt like home.”

Still set to come this weekend at Glastonbury 2024 are performances from SZA, Shania Twain, Janelle Monae, The National, Two Door Cinema Club, Avril Lavigne, Justice, Nia Archives, James Blake, Alvvays, Romy and more.

Camila Cabello’s chaotic set scored a three-star rating, while Dua Lipa’s Friday headlining performance earned her four starsIDLES and Fontaines D.C nabbed perfect five-star ratings as did the festival’s first K-pop performers SEVENTEEN.
