Patti Smith has covered Lana Del Rey‘s ‘Summertime Sadness’ in Dublin – watch footage of the emotional cover below.

Last night (June 27), Smith took over Vicar Street in Dublin, Ireland for a performance. During the show, Smith performed tracks such as ‘Summer Cannibals’, ‘Redondo Beach’, ‘Peaceable Kingdom’, ‘Dancing Barefoot’ and more.
Halfway through her set, Smith surprised audiences with a cover of Lana Del Rey’s ‘Summertime Sadness’. Smith was visibly emotional during the cover, and she dedicated the song to her late husband and MC5 member Fred Smith. She told audiences that the track reminded her of their “wild youth”.

Earlier in the night, she covered Bob Dylan’s ‘Man in the Long Black Coat’. It marked just the second time she has performed the song live, and the third overall, posting a video of her cover onto YouTube earlier this month.
For her second last song of the night, Patti Smith and her band covered Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. Smith has long been fond of the track, having performed it countless times over the years. She first covered the song in 2007, releasing a stripped back version of it.
Earlier this year, Lana Del Rey announced a new country album, ‘Lasso’. While the album has yet to receive a release date, the singer spoke to NME‘s Andrew Trendell in May. Though she didn’t reveal much about the album, Lana suggested that the album’s lyrics might be lighter than her more recent output.
“I’ve maybe less to say in terms of any self-revealing things like on ‘Tunnel’ or ‘Blue Bannisters’ or ‘Chemtrails Over The Country Club’, and just more melodic. Maybe more American Songbook style?”
Lana Del Rey is due to headline Reading & Leeds 2024 over the upcoming August bank holiday (23-25). She’ll play Reading on Saturday, August 24 and Leeds on Sunday, August 25. Tickets are available to buy here.
