The LA band are currently on their first UK and Europe headline tour in eight years, where they stopped off in Cologne on Tuesday (June 25).

Shortly after his appearance at Download, Rage Against The Machine‘s Tom Morello surprised the audience in Cologne by going on stage with Jane’s Addiction and duetting two of their songs.

He firstly came on stage to play ‘Mountain Song’, taken off their 1988 debut ‘Nothing’s Shocking’. He then make a guest appearance one final time to round off their show by performing ‘Chip Away’ – take a look at the performances below:

NME caught up with the musician at Download this year, where he opened up about collaborating with his son, 13-year-old Roman.

“So my new single, ‘Soldier In The Army Of Love’ is the first song from what will be my first ever solo rock album. It’s a collaboration with my 13-year-old son, Roman. During the pandemic, while the rest of us were baking bread and trying to learn a language, he was practising guitar for eight hours a day.

“I’ve been relegated to being the rhythm guitar player in my family as I have a shredding prodigy now who’s really giving me a run for my money. One day I was walking by his room and these huge drop-D riffs were coming out of there and I said ‘What’s that’ and he said ‘Oh, I’ve just been working on some riffs, do you think these go well together?’. I was like ‘Son. Those go very well together and we’re about to write our first song together.’

“So ‘Soldier In The Army Of Love’ is about the redemptive power of rock and roll. It’s got huge Morello riffs from multi-generations and a shredding guitar solo where you have to guess which one of us played.”

Meanwhile, NME reviewed Jane’s Addiction when they visited London back in May in a five-star review: “Now back in full swing, fan-favourites including ‘Mountain Song’, ‘Ain’t No Right’ and ‘Been Caught Stealing’ come in thick and fast, and seem to have a new lease of life that push the set to new heights.

“Not only does Navarro take every chance he gets to showcase a dizzying number of electrifying licks, but Perkins and Avery hold down the rhythm section with enough intensity to put anyone to shame — all while telepathically knowing when to toy with dynamics and take the renditions in sonic new directions.”
