The anticipated new thriller from the director of The Witch and The Lighthouse depicts a “gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake”.

In the first-look trailer, Depp’s character is found making a desperate plea as she whispers “come to me” and “hear my call”, before the scene cuts to a hand grabbing her throat followed by a blood-curdling scream.

Other scenes reveal terror being unleashed in the wake of Nosferatu’s arrival, before teasing a chilling tagline: “Succumb to the darkness.”

The film is a reimagined version of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 classic, and also stars Willem Dafoe, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson and Simon McBurney.

Check out the new trailer below.

Depp stars as Ellen Hutter in the new film, while Skarsgård will play the titular vampire, Count Orlok, with a bloodthirsty infatuation.

The director recently spoke to Empire magazine about what viewers will be able to expect from the new film, confirming: “Yeah, it’s a scary film. It’s a horror movie. It’s a Gothic horror movie.”

He went on: “And I do think that there hasn’t been an old-school Gothic movie that’s actually scary in a while. And I think that the majority of audiences will find this one to be the case.”

The director also told the film magazine that the movie is “even more Ellen’s story than previous versions”, adding: “And Lily-Rose is absolutely phenomenal.”

Eggers’ last film was 2022’s The Northman, which NME gave five stars, writing: “Gladiator meets Hamlet meets Star Wars in Robert Eggers’ Nordic masterpiece.”

Nosferatu will be available to watch in UK cinemas from January 3.
