The screenwriter has worked with Scorsese several times over the decades, including on the classic films Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and The Last Temptation of Christ, and is also known for his own directorial career, which in recent years has included First Reformed and The Card Counter.

In a new interview with Variety, it has been reported that Schrader showed up with “a massive, bloody bandage” wrapped around his hand.

“So on Tuesday night, I had dinner with Marty at his place,” Schrader explained when asked about his injury.

“He has these dogs. They were very cute. Two of them were bichon frisé. They’re really beautiful. But then, he has a Scottie, which is a problematic dog. It was his daughter’s dog. He doesn’t like the dog, but they have to keep him and blah, blah, blah.”

Schrader explained that he leaned in to pet the Scottie, adding: “The Scottie not only took out part of my thumb, he ate it.”

Schrader is preparing for the premiere of his new film Oh, Canada at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17. Based on the novel Foregone by Russell Banks, it stars Richard Gere as a tormented writer on the brink of death. Jacob Elordi, Uma Thurman and Michael Imperioli also star.

Scorsese, meanwhile, is reported to be planning his next film to be A Life Of Jesus, based on a 1973 fictional retelling of Jesus’ life by Shūsaku Endō.

He is said to be eyeing Andrew Garfield and Miles Teller to star in the film, which he intends to finance independently, much as he did with the 2016 drama Silence, in which Garfield also starred.

Further details about the project are currently under wraps, but Scorsese recently told America Magazine that it will not be a “usual, straight narrative” that recounts the life and times of Jesus.

Elsewhere, Scorsese is also set to direct a Frank Sinatra biopic starring Leonardo DiCaprioJennifer Lawrence is reportedly being considered for the role of Sinatra’s second wife, the actress Ava Gardner.
