Big Ocean, a groundbreaking idol group from South Korea featuring members with hearing impairments, debuted on April 20 with the song ‘Glow’ coinciding with the Day of Persons with Disabilities in Korea. Comprised of Lee Chan-yeon, Park Hyun-jin, and Kim Ji-seok, this trio is signed under Parastar Entertainment, a pioneering agency focused on artists with disabilities. The group’s debut song is a unique rendition of H.O.T’s ‘Hope,’ which creatively includes sign language in its choreography.
Park Hyun-jin, the main vocalist, expressed that Big Ocean aims to serve as a bridge between disabled and non-disabled communities, challenging existing stereotypes and promoting inclusivity. He desires for the group to be recognized for their talent and performances, rather than their disabilities.
Before entering the music industry, each member was engaged in different professions, highlighting their diverse backgrounds and commitment to overcoming personal challenges. Lee Chan-yeon was working as an audiologist at Korea University Anam Hospital, Kim Ji-seok was a member of the Seoul Disabled Ski Association, and Park Hyun-jin was a well-known YouTuber who documented his daily life with disabilities. Through their music and presence, Big Ocean seeks to inspire and engage audiences, fostering a more inclusive society.
