Popular Idol Admits To The Struggles That Led To Her “Scandalous” New Career

For many former idols, continuing to work in the entertainment industry can be a struggle, with many resorting to alternative means to make money.

One way some idols stay in the spotlight is through streaming. Streaming can be lucrative, with some clearing six figures in just a few months as fans of these idols will spend huge amounts supporting their activities.

Recently, a popular third-generation idol expressed her concerns and reasons for streaming on one of Korea’s most-known platforms.

In 2014, Woolim Entertainment debuted the girl group Lovelyz, the first female idol group under their company.

The group saw steady popularity and growth until 2021, when seven members departed from Woolim, with the members still desiring to promote and release albums together.

Member Jisoo was among the seven who departed, with the idol signing to MYSTIC Story under their MYSIC Actors division.

On February 26, the idol surprised fans by going live on the platform AfreecaTV, where she informed fans that she would begin working as a streamer. She said she chose due to things “not going well” for her acting career lately.

I’ve been pursuing acting opportunities, but things haven’t been going well for me lately. I chose to start streaming after carefully considering what I could do well in a world where trends are constantly changing.

Jisoo also said she had concerns over this new career but wanted to stream with a “happy heart.”

“I hesitated a lot, to be honest. I was concerned about how this would affect my image. […]My career in the entertainment industry has experienced highs and lows. As I’ve gone through both success and failure, all I want now is to stream with a happy heart and people I love to enjoy my streaming

— Jisoo

Her concern stems from the reputation AfreecaTV BJs have because of their stream content. Many streamers wear revealing clothing and do suggestive things while streaming, considered by some a less explicit version of “camgirl work.”

And while this is valid work, Korea’s more conservative values mean there is a judgment against these performers.

However, Jisoo has stated that she will be streaming games as she “likes to play them.
