In their latest single, “Why Not! Cyborg Amok,” the dark music duo Cyborg Amok delivers a striking synthesis of post-punk and synth-rock. Released under the GABWorx label, this single represents a bold stride forward for the pair of musicians. Recorded at Sun Mountain Studios with the esteemed producer David Baron, the track boasts an impressive lineup featuring Mark Gemini Thwaite (of Peter Murphy and The Mission fame) on guitars and Emilio Zef China (known for his work with Peter Murphy and Jonathan Davis) on bass.
At the core of this single is Brydon Bullock, who not only penned the track but also lends his evocative lead vocals and signature drum grooves. Greg Bullock complements the arrangement with intricate keyboard work, and synth programming was contributed by David Baron.
The track commences with an infectious guitar riff, swiftly layering in retro new wave organ synths and a robust bassline groove. The vocals, a space-age retro croon, hark back to the proto-goth luminaries of the late 60s and early 70s, offering a sound that’s both nostalgic and refreshing, like rewatching an old movie you haven’t seen in decades. And all of this is just before the jaw-dropping, anthemic chorus kicks in.
Discussing the creation of this version, Brydon Bullock reflects, “Creating the Cyborg Amok version of this song was really exciting for me. When I wrote this song, I envisioned releasing a solo single, but working in the context of Cyborg Amok added a new dimension to the song overall. We took the song down a darker, heavier rock path than my original idea. The full band concept really pulls this version together.”
Greg Bullock shares his experience working with David Baron: “It was a brilliant experience working with David. His body of work speaks for itself, but being able to fiddle with an array of vintage synthesizers during our sessions was amazing. Several of these instruments can typically only be seen in museums. The layering and FX we were able to employ makes this song truly unique.”

The single “Why Not! Cyborg Amok” serves as a precursor to their upcoming album “Pins & Needles,” slated for release in 2024. The album promises to maintain Cyborg Amok’s dark-rock essence while exploring new territories. It will feature contributions from Mark Gemini Thwaite, Greg Bullock in his dual role as lead vocalist and synthesizer player, Brydon Bullock’s powerful drumming and backing vocals, and Emilio Zef China on several tracks. David Baron will not only produce and engineer the album but also add his expertise in synthesizer programming.
