The seemingly insignificant action of a Japanese man almost cost him his life.
On December 16 at around midnight, a cockroach invaded the home of a 54-year old man from Kumamoto, Japan. He immediately found a can of insecticide and sprayed a large amount on the insect.
An explosion took place roughly a minute afterwards. The Kumamoto Higashi Police Station noted that it broke his balcony and left him with several injuries, though they were thankfully minor. A burn spot was also found on the table nearby.
The exact cause of the 54-year old man’s explosion was not revealed by the police, however, this is not the first time this happened. The National Consumer Affairs Center of Japan received similar reports of explosions occurring around the nation with the common denominator being insecticides. These contain alcohol and other flammable ingredients inside the bottle which cause explosions when they come in contact with electrical outlets.
Citizens are now being urged to avoid using insecticide sprays, deodorants, and the like near heat and fire. They should also be ready to ventilate the room after spraying indoors or in a car.
