Since the start of the pandemic, SEVENTEEN (along with other groups) has turned to online fan calls to interact with fans. It has meant that the members can now interact with fans from across the world.

On December 19, SEVENTEEN had fan calls for yzy and as always, netizens loved seeing the interactions between the members and fans. Yet, one fan call with Joshua has gone viral for all the wrong reasons after netizens dubbed it “inappropriate” and “cringe.”

While Joshua is always sweet, fans couldn’t get over how polite he was during a fan call when the person asked if they could call him “Mom.” The sentiment was because the fan thought Joshua had traits like a “mom,” and Joshua went along with it.

After the call was posted, netizens couldn’t hide their anger and disgust at the narrative of the call, with many pointing out how traumatic it probably was for Joshua.

Another fan call from that same event similarly received negative attention for its “cringe” and “inappropriate” narrative, and it was with Hoshi.

While Hoshi is known for being playful, especially with his “Horanghae agenda,” many thought a fan overstepped their mark. Just like with Joshua, fans shared their anger when a video was posted of Hoshi calling a fan “mom.”

why would you ask him to be his mother https://t.co/3yDh08oCtR pic.twitter.com/H9bxtUSuHY

The OP quickly defended the hate they received by explaining that rather than asking Hoshi to say that, the idol said it in response to her initial statement.

I said to Hoshi, I don’t want to be your wife, I want to be your mom.Because you are so cute, I want to have a cute child like you. How happiness if i can be your mother!
I didn’t expect him call me “Mommy” directly and say “I love you, Mom” in Chinese. https://t.co/XL1M3hEYpt

While the fan who spoke to Hoshi clarified the fan call, the rise in “inappropriate” narratives when speaking to idols has concerned netizens. Many fans think that idols and staff should be able to turn off calls if they go down a different route, and calls should be used to chat with idols, not create a “narrative.”
