Trevor Horn Recruits Iggy Pop For Cover Of Depeche Mode’s ‘Personal Jesus’

Trevor Horn has recruited the legendary Iggy Pop for a version of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus.” The track is taken from Horn’s new album Echoes – Ancient & Modern. Trevor Horn reflected on working with Iggy, saying, “He said: ‘I’ve heard the track, I’m going to do three takes where I gradually get crazier and crazier and then a fourth take where I speak it and that will be it. You don’t mind if I run my own session?’ I said, ‘No, go ahead,’ and that’s exactly what he did. It’s Iggy, after all. Iggy adds another truth to whatever he does. We didn’t let the Johnny Cash version enter our thinking. We came to it as though there was only the Depeche Mode universe and here’s Iggy swinging it his way on some deviant variety TV show he happens to host.”

Horn himself sings vocals on a Roxy Music classic as well as producing Marc Almond, Tori Amos, Rick Astley, Andrea Corr, Steve Hogarth, Lady Blackbird, Jack Lukeman, Iggy Pop, Seal, and Toyah Wilcox &andRobert Fripp in tracks originally performed by Pat Benatar, The Cars, Depeche Mode, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Billy Idol, Joe Jackson, Grace Jones, Kendrick Lamar, Nirvana, and Yes.

Echoes – Ancient & Modern will be released on CD, vinyl, and digitally on December 1. The album will be accompanied by a booklet including an interview with the producer by his long-time friend and collaborator Paul Morley.
