The 2023 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) recently announced the award candidates’ list. The BBMA selects award nominees based on Billboard chart performance over the past 12 months, including album and digital sales, radio airplay, streaming, tours, and social engagement. In particular, the K-Pop category was newly established this year, and with the influence of K-pop expanding globally, HYBE LABELS artists showed an overwhelming presence by accounting for the majority of award candidates in this category.
BTS, who won a total of 12 trophies at the BBMAs for six consecutive years from 2017 to last year, is nominated for various categories this year as solo artists.
BTS’s Suga | BBMA
Suga was nominated for Top K-Pop Touring Artist, while Jungkook and Jimin were nominated for Top Global K-Pop Song. In addition, Jimin was nominated in other categories, including Top Selling Song/Like Crazy, Top K-Pop Album/FACE, and Top Global Artist, making him the most nominated K-Pop solo artist.
In particular, Jimin is the first K-Pop solo artist to be nominated in the Top Selling Song category, in which BTS won the award for two consecutive years in 2021 and 2022.
Tomorrow X Together | BBMA
TXT was nominated for Top Global K-Pop Artist and Top K-Pop Album for the fifth mini album, The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION, which topped Billboard’s 200 chart in February.
NewJeans | BBMA
NewJeans was nominated for the BBMAs just one year after its debut and was the most nominated K-Pop artist. They were nominated for Top Billboard Global(Excl. U.S.) Artist, Top Global K-Pop Artist, Top K-Pop Album (Get Up) and Top K-Pop Song. They entered the Hot 100 chart within a half a year of their debut with “Ditto” and “OMG” and ranked first on the Billboard 200 with the second mini album, Get Up in July.
Meanwhile, the 2023 BBMAs, which is considered one of the three major award ceremonies in American pop music, along with the Grammy Awards and American Music Awards, will be held at the MCM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on November 19.
